Azerbaijan's Baku Int'l Sea Trade Port ramps up cargo transshipment volume

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 19

The volume of cargo transshipment in the Baku International Sea Trade Port from January through May 2020 amounted to 1.7 million tons, Head of International Cooperation and PR Department of the port Zaur Hasanov told Trend on June 19.

“The growth in volume of cargo transshipment in the port made up 22.5 percent compared to the same period of last year,” he said.

According to him, 261,200 tons of dry cargo were handled in the first five months of this year, which is 4.4 times more compared to the same period of 2019, while rail freight decreased by 24.2 percent, amounting to 13,970 wagons.

“There are special zones created for TIR truck drivers in the territory of the port. With the aim to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and detect the infection cases, all drivers of the trucks arriving in the Port of Baku are accommodated in a special temporary quarantine zone created inside the port,” he said.

Hasanov stressed that the Port of Baku employees, together with the State Customs Committee personnel, doctors of the Azerbaijani Management Union of Medical Territorial Units (TABIB) and Referans Clinical Laboratory Centerbegan conducting the testing of drivers at the Red Bridge customs border checkpoint due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Baku International Sea Trade Port has been working closely with the EU in enhancing its operational efficiency, port management, environmental and risk management. It has ISO 9001: 2015, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 certificates. It uses UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in its business processes and operations.
