Railway line between Iran-Afghanistan to be launched soon

A part of the railway line between Iran and Afghanistan will be put into operation on November 5, Deputy Minister for Roads and Urban Development and the CEO of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (RAI) Saeed Rasouli said, Trend reports citing the ministry.

Rasouli noted that the total length of the Khaf-Herat railway is 218 kilometers and is divided into four parts.

The deputy minister added that thus, the 1st and 2nd part of the railway accounts for 76 kilometers of this distance and cover the areas from Khaf to Shamtigh in Iran. While 3rd part accounts for 62 kilometers and covers the areas from Shamtigh to Rozanak between Iran-Afghanistan.

The CEO emphasized that the 4th part of the railway accounts for 80 kilometers of the total distance and covers the areas from Rozanak to Herat in Afghanistan. And this part of the railway is being laid by Afghanistan.

According to Rasouli, the part from Khaf to Rozanak will be put into operation on November 5 and with the launch of the railway, the freight trains will start to operate.

"Afghanistan can benefit from the transit of goods to the east-west, north-south directions through this railway by moving on Iran. Afghanistan can also exchange its goods from European countries through the CIS countries, the Persian Gulf countries, and Turkey. At the same time, other countries can transport their goods to Afghanistan through this railway,” he said.
