BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 14

Uzbekistan and Afghanistan plan to resume direct flights in January 2021, Trend reports referring to the program for the development of cooperation between the two countries

Uzbekistan Airways and Uzbekistan Airports plan to hold negotiations with KamAir Afghan airlines and Ariana Afghan Airlines in order to sign a bilateral agreement on the resumption of flights in December.

Uzbekistan and Afghanistan for the first time launched direct civil flights on the Kabul-Tashkent route at the end of November 2017. The flights were operated by the Afghan air carrier KamAir under a code-sharing agreement (joint flight operation).

Passengers from Afghanistan previously flew to Tashkent only via Istanbul or Dubai, spending from 17 to 32 hours. After the launch of the direct flights, it became possible to get from Kabul to Tashkent directly, in just an hour and a half.

It was planned to use Tashkent International Airport named after Islam Karimov as a hub for Kam Air passengers for connecting flights to Germany, Great Britain, and other European countries.

Initially, it was about two flights a week, then the parties were ready to increase them to four. But then the decline in passenger traffic and the pandemic led to the closure of this direction.
