Kazakhstan talks improving safety of shipping in Caspian Sea

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Mar.16

Trend:

Kazakhstan takes measures to improve the safety of shipping in its sector of the Caspian Sea, a source in the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructural Development told Trend on Mar.16.

The source reminded that in February 2021, deputies of the country's parliament approved the bill ‘On ratification of 2007 Nairobi convention for removal of sunken ships’.

According to the source, ratification of the convention is aimed at improving safety of shipping in the Caspian Sea’s Kazakh sector and will create preventive legal mechanism for the quick and effective removal of sunken ships and liquidation of the consequences of a marine accident.

“The convention defines the obligations of owner of a ship entering ports of the convention’s member countries and the flag state to present insurance guarantee for the costs of raising the vessel in case of its sinking and certificate of such insurance,” added the source.

Earlier, the Ministry’s Head Beibut Atamkulov noted that the need to ratify the convention is due to the increased shipping in the Caspian Sea.

The convention was adopted under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization. To date, 53 states have acceded to the convention.
