Azerbaijan's 2M2021 cargo, passenger traffics fluctuate

The total volume of cargo transportation by all types of vehicles in Azerbaijan from Jan. through Feb. 2021 made up 30.3 million tons, down by 11.1 percent compared to 2M2020, Trend reports referring to the report of the State Statistical Committee.

According to the committee, cargo handling by road transport for the reporting period accounted for 53.5 percent of all traffic, by pipelines – 34.7 percent, by railways – 8.5 percent, by the sea – 3 percent, and by air – 0.3 percent.

The committee said that the freight traffic in the private sector decreased by 14 percent over the year, which accounted for 75.5 percent of all traffic.

In the reporting period, 162.3 million passengers were transported, which is 47.7 percent less in annual terms. Most (99.8 percent) of the passengers were transported by road and the rest (0.2 percent) - by other transportation means.

Besides, 2.6 million tons of cargo were transported by rail (an increase of 10.6 percent), as well as 300,500 passengers, which is 64.1 percent less than a year earlier.

The average number of loaded railway cars per day was 384, unloaded - 374. The average daily load of cars in the northern direction of the railway was 18,300 tons, in the western direction – 3,400 tons, and in the southern direction – 1,000 tons.

During the reporting period, 896,600 tons of cargo were transported by sea, which is 7.5 percent more than in 2M2020. Oil cargo accounted for 41.8 percent of all traffic. The volume of cargo handled in the ports of Azerbaijan in the first 2 months of 2021 amounted to 1,384 tons, of which 97.4 percent of the total volume fell on transit cargo (over 1.3 million tons).

As of March 1 of this year, the volume of the remaining cargo in the ports amounted to 39,200 tons. The number of passengers carried by this type of transport decreased by 31.2 percent compared to last year, amounting to 2,200 people.

In 2M2021, 16.3 million tons of cargo were transported by road, which is 19.2 percent less year on year.

Meanwhile, the volume of passenger traffic by road for the specified period amounted to 161.9 million people (a decrease of 40.1 percent compared to 2M2020). So, 92.8 percent of passengers were transported by buses, and 7.2 percent accounted for taxi services. Freight turnover was reduced by 28.4 percent, and passenger turnover - by 37.2 percent.

Besides, 59,300 passengers were transported by air, which is 82.6 percent less than from Jan. through. Feb.2020. The private sector accounted for 1.2 percent of this mode of transport. Freight traffic by air for the year increased by 74 percent, and their volume amounted to 79,000 tons.
