By Fidan Babayeva - Trend:

Freight traffic in the direction of Asia-Europe-Asia has great potential in the development of container traffic, Secretary-General of the PS IGC TRACECA Asset Asavbayev said, Trend reports.

Asavbayev made the statement during the online event entitled "Increasing the Competitiveness of International Rail Transport within TRACECA".

According to the secretary-general, data for 2019 shows that 30 percent of export products come from three Asian countries: China, Japan, and South Korea.

“These countries are the main trading partners of the EU countries. In addition, the main foreign economic partners of the TRACECA states have been studied. Also, it became known that the countries of the corridor carry out trade mainly with the border states and the EU countries. The TRACECA corridor should be used to expand transit potential,” the official added.

Asavbayev noted that in order to determine the potential volume of container traffic, a detailed analysis of cargo was carried out over the past 20 years among 75 countries of Europe and Asia.

“Mutual trade in one way or another can affect the volumes of transported goods in transit through the territories of the TRACECA countries. In the long term, the coronavirus pandemic will not affect the value of future trade, according to the forecast. By 2030, the volume of Eurasian trade will amount to $13.3 trillion (an increase of 45 percent compared to 2019), in terms of volume, this will amount to 6.7 billion tons, which is 30 percent more compared to 2019,” he said.

As the TRACECA official stated, these figures serve as a starting point for determining the volume of cargo that can be transported by container trains in transit through the territories of the TRACECA member states.
