Iran to sign agreement with Azerbaijan on maritime affairs (Exclusive)

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 12

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

An agreement on maritime affairs will be signed between Iran and Azerbaijan in the near future, Executive Director of the Khazar Shipping Company Davood Tafti told Trend.

According to him, the agreement will be mainly on transit in the East-West Corridor.

The director added that Iran has activated the North-South Corridor together with Azerbaijan. In addition, the Islamic Republic intends to cooperate with Azerbaijan in the East-West Corridor.

“Azerbaijan and Iran are located in the East-West and North-South Corridors, and cargo from Europe will be transported to the Persian Gulf. The cargo transported from Europe to Asia will be transported to Iranian ports via Azerbaijani ports. It will be transported from Iranian ports to eastern countries, including Afghanistan and Pakistan,” he said.

Tafti noted that through its representative office in South Korea, the Khazar Shipping Company has created certain infrastructures to transport cargo directly from South Korea to the southern ports of Iran and from there to Azerbaijan by railways or the northern ports.

He stressed it is impossible to act independently in the field of transit.

"Every step that can provide better customer service must be supported by all authorities. For example, if the railway is more successful in any area, all other agencies, including shipping, should help the railway to increase transit.

“The goal of Khazar Shipping Company is to make the most of the potential of the ports,” he said.
