The volume of international freight traffic carried out by the transport sectors of Georgia (road, rail, civil aviation) amounted to 11 million tons from January through June 2021, Trend reports citing data from the Georgian Ministry of Economy.
Еhis figure is 12.7 percent more than in the same period in 2020 (9.8 million tons).
In addition, during the same period, there was an increase in the amount of cargo transported through the international airports of Georgia, which amounted to 8,800 tons, which is 23.4 percent more than the volume of cargo transported in the reporting period of 2020 (7,100 tons).
The volume of cargo handling in the country's ports decreased by 59.8 percent compared to 2020 and amounted to 13.9 million tons.
The number of containers shipped in ports decreased by 23.8 percent and amounted to 203,808 TEU, while 153.9 thousand TEU were shipped in Poti (a decrease of 25.6 percent), and in Batumi - 49,800 TEU (a decrease of 17.9 percent).
Freight traffic by road increased from 13.2 to 13.4 million tons, rail - from 5.5 to 6 million tons, and air traffic from 7.1 to 8,800 tons.
Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Natia Turnava noted that the matter concerns the goods that go through Georgia and in the direction of Georgia.
"The volume of cargo transported by land transport is growing at a particularly high rate, which, despite the coronavirus pandemic, we have not stopped, but, on the contrary, are supporting as much as possible. This means that our corridor is working very actively. Transportation on the new Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is also are developing at a very high rate," said Turnava.
The minister has allocated container cargoes heading to China or from China through the middle corridor, one of the strategic parts of which is Georgia.
"I must say that this corridor has really taken place, and if we look at the growth rates, the amount of cargo going from China or transported to China in containers has practically tripled," she said.
