BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 22
By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:
The number of TEU containers loaded and unloaded in Iranian ports increased by 13 percent during the first five months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through August 22, 2021), compared to the same period last Iranian year, Deputy Chairman of the Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) Farhad Montaser Koohsari said, Trend reports citing the organization’s website.
Koohsari noted that a total of 906,218 TEU containers were loaded and unloaded in Iranian ports over the reporting period. Meanwhile, in the same period last Iranian year, the figure stood at 798,478 TEU containers.
“The largest number of TEU containers were loaded and unloaded in Iran’s Shahid Rajaee port. Thus, 694,450 TEU containers were loaded and unloaded in the port. This is accounted for 87 percent of total container operations in Iranian ports,” he added.
The deputy stressed that the PMO is taking steps to carry out large cargo transportation through Iran, especially the port of Shahid Rajaee. Iran hopes that container traffic to European countries, the Middle East and China via Iran's southern ports will increase.
According to Koohsari, increasing container operations in Iranian ports is one of the important issues. The launch of the 3rd terminal in the Shahid Rajaee port in this regard, will increase the container capacity of the port from 6.5 million TEU to 8.5 million TEU per year.
