BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 23

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The Shahid Rajaee port in the Hormozgan Province (southern Iran) can link the countries of southern Asia, the countries around the Persian Gulf with the Caspian littoral states, the Caucasus countries and Central Asia to one another, Director General of Ports and Maritime Department in Hormozgan Province Alireza Mohammadi said, Trend reports citing Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO).

The part of North-South Corridor that lies on Iran's territory (railway) is unusable due to certain railway parts are still under construction. Iran sees the Shahid Rajaee port, which currently isn't part of NSTC, as an alternative to the railroads under construction.

Iran’s Shahid Rajaee port is located on an area of 2,400 hectares. The port has the capacity to receive 100 million tons of cargo a year.

According to Mohammadi, the transit between the mentioned countries through the Shahid Rajaee port will result in reduced distances and costs, as well as will create other opportunities.

The director general noted that the Shahid Rajaee port is one of the main gateways for Iran's exports, imports and transit. So, more than half of the country's imports, exports and transit are carried out through this port.

The International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC) is a 7,200-km-long multi-mode network of ship, rail, and road route for moving freight between India, Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Russia, Central Asia and Europe.

The route primarily involves moving freight from India, Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia via ship, rail and road. The objective of the corridor is to increase trade connectivity between major cities such as Mumbai, Moscow, Tehran, Baku, Bandar Abbas, Astrakhan, Bandar Anzali, etc.
