Weekly review of main events in Azerbaijan's transport sector

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jan. 8

By Sadraddin Aghjayev - Trend:

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Digital Development and Transport and the Azerbaijan International Road Carriers Association (ABADA) extended this week the term of the memorandum on cooperation for international road cargo transportation, Trend reports.

This document is aimed at expanding the opportunities for local road carriers to enter the international cargo transportation market and creating more favorable conditions for expanding cooperation in the field of international cargo transportation via road transport.

Besides, the memorandum envisions issuance of permit application forms, which will contribute to development of multilateral and bilateral cargo transportation, ensuring transparency in the distribution of these documents between local road carriers and international structures.

The memorandum on cooperation in the field of international cargo transportation via road transport between the ministry and ABADA was signed on May 27, 2021.

Besides, the Center for Analysis of Economic Reforms and Communications (CAERC) said this week that the Zangazur corridor will contribute to trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Turkey reaching $15 billion by 2023. The launch of the corridor and the restoration of communication links in the region will create great opportunities both at the local and global levels.

At the local level, the opening of this corridor will mean establishment of a direct land connection between the main part of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan [its exclave separated by the territory of Armenia], and also facilitation of access to Central Asian countries.

Within the global prospects, new geopolitical realities create great opportunities in bilateral and multilateral economic relations of the countries participating in the "3 + 3" platform (Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Turkey, Russia, Iran).

According to CAERC, this corridor can also be used by the countries of the Asia-Pacific region to transport goods to Africa through Turkey. Moreover, the implementation of the North-South international transport corridor into the East-West transport line will create a single transport network in the region. Thus, the Zangazur corridor will bring complex benefits at the regional and global levels, acting as a transport hub for international communication projects.

In the outgoing week, TRACECA said that Azerbaijan continues road cargo shipments in the direction of Kazakhstan despite the situation in this country [mass riots], and also continues to receive cargo from there by land.
