The transit of goods by railways through Iran increased by 189 percent, during the first 10 months of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through January 20, 2022), compared to the same period last Iranian year, Trend reports via the report of Iranian Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.
According to the report, a total of 1.56 million tons of goods were transited via Iranian railways in 10 months. Meanwhile, in the same period last Iranian year, the figure stood at 540,000 tons.
“Over the past 10 years, Iran recorded the largest transit via railways four years ago (March 21, 2017 through March 20, 2018). So, 1.32 million tons of goods were transited by railways through Iran within the mentioned year,” the report said.
At the same time, Iran has taken a number of steps in the direction to transit of goods by road and railways and signed agreements since the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2021). These agreements were signed between Iran and Azerbaijan, Iran and Pakistan, Iran and Kyrgyzstan, and Iran and Turkmenistan.
During 10 months, a total of 39 million tons of cargo were transported by Iranian railways. Cargo transportation decreased by 7 percent, compared to the same period last Iranian year. Thus, 42 million tons of cargo had been transported by Iranian railways in the same period last Iranian year.
According to the report, the coronavirus pandemic has resulted in a decline in passenger transportation via Iranian railways over the past three years.
Despite, passenger transportation by railways through Iran for the first 10 months of the current Iranian year increased by about 2 times (8.3 million passengers), compared to the same months last Iranian year.
Thus, a total of 16.8 million passengers were transported by Iranian railways in 10 months.
