Iran, Kazakhstan maritime relations promise bright future – official

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 22

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The maritime relations between Iran and Kazakhstan promise a very bright future, given the maritime and port potentials and opportunities of the two countries, Director General at the Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) for Logistics and Multimodal Transport, Khosrow Saraei said, Trend reports citing the organization.

He made the remark during a meeting with the head of Aktau International Sea Commercial Port JSC, Abay Turikpenbaev.

“The main strategy of the Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization for the development of economic cooperation with Kazakhstan is to carry out operations on cargo transportation through sea and land between the two countries, digitalization of cargo transportation, and electronic tracking of cargo,” Saraei said.

The director general added that one of the priorities of the PMO for the development of cooperation between the two countries in maritime trade is the development of container transportation.

According to him, one of the main issues in cargo transportation between the two countries is the lack of Ro-Ro ships and related services. There are currently up to 80 percent discounts on Ro-Ro ship services in Iranian ports.

Saraei stressed that Iran's new government intends to purchase Ro-Ro ships with the participation of the private sector. Iran and Kazakhstan need their own Ro-Ro ships to be able to carry out cargo transportation through the mentioned ships without the need for other countries.

During the meeting, the head of Aktau International Sea Commercial Port JSC, Abay Turikpenbaev noted that Kazakhstan considers the use of transit potential of Iranian ports and the production of containers in ports as serious programs.

Turikpenbaev also pointed out that Kazakhstan can use Iran's port and maritime potential to increase exports to East Asian countries. In this regard, it is possible to transit various goods through the Caspian Sea.
