BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 18. Cargo transportation by all modes of transport in Azerbaijan amounted to 49.3 million tons in 1Q2022, which is 5.7 percent more than in the same period in 2021, Trend reports via The State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

According to the committee, 55.9 percent of all cargo was transported by road, 33.2 percent by pipeline, 7.7 percent by rail, 2.9 percent by sea and 0.3 percent by air.

Cargo transportation in the private sector increased by 6.8 percent during the specified period compared to 1Q2021. The share of this sector in the total volume of cargo transportation was 76.9 percent.

Passenger transportation in Azerbaijan in the reporting period exceeded 345.1 million people, which is 36.3 percent more than in the same period in 2021. Most of the passengers (86.4 percent) were transported by road, 13.2 percent - by metro, 0.4 percent - by other modes of transport.

Cargo transportation by rail from January through March 2022 amounted to 3.8 million tons (an increase of 1.2 percent) and passenger transportation – 944,200 people (an increase of 98.2 percent).

More than 1.4 million tons of cargo were transported by sea in the reporting period, which is 3.9 percent less than in 1Q2021. The share of oil in the total volume of cargo transportation was 44.3 percent.

The volume of cargo handled in Azerbaijan’s ports in 1Q2022 exceeded 2.5 million tons, of which 94.2 percent or about 2.3 million tons were transit cargo. The volume of remaining cargo in the ports amounted to 54,400 tons as of April 1, 2022.

A total of 27.5 million tons of cargo were transported by road in the reporting period, which is 8.9 percent more than in 1Q2021 and passenger transportation by this mode of transport amounted to almost 298.1 million people (an increase of 18 percent).

Baku metro transported 45.6 million passengers during the reporting period.

Over 364,400 passengers were transported by air in 1Q2022, which is three times more than in the same period of 2021. Cargo transportation by air for the year increased by 41.2 percent - up to 152,900 tons.
