Cargo transit through Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province increases

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 15. Cargo transit through the customs of Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province (north-western Iran), increased by 17 percent in value and 55 percent in volume, over the last Iranian year (March 21, 2022, through March 20, 2023), compared to the preceding year (March 21, 2021, through March 20, 2022), Supervisor of Iran's West Azerbaijan Province Customs Office Khaled Jangjoo told IRNA, Trend reports.

According to him, a total of 3.4 million tons of cargo worth $8.44 billion were transited through the province's customs in the last Iranian year.

“Furthermore, 470,000 tons of cargo worth approximately $1.15 billion were transited to other regions of the country through West Azerbaijan Province’s customs for the last year, which is an increase of 2 percent in value and 38 percent in volume compared to the preceding year,” Jangjoo said.

The official also pointed out that 3.47 million people crossed through the province's customs during the last Iranian year. This is 2 times more than in the preceding year. So, 1.73 million people came to the country and 1.74 million people left the country via customs of Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province. An average of 10,000 people cross through the province's customs every day.

Overall, more than 12 million tons of cargo were transited through Iran within the first 11 months of the last Iranian year (March 21, 2022, through February 19, 2023), which is an increase of 5.22 percent compared to the same period in the preceding Iranian year.
