Iran spends $1.6B to renew, enhance airport in Razavi Khorasan Province

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 25. Iran has spent 67 trillion rials (about $1.6 billion) on the upgrade of the Gonabad Airport located in the same named county of Iran’s Razavi Khorasan Province in the north-east of the country, Trend reports.

Iran's Gonabad airport was owned by the Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics of Iran until 2011. After the airport was entrusted to the Iran Airports and Air Navigation Company (IAC), new runways, terminals and other airport facilities were built in the last 12 years.

The upgrade Gonabad Airport which is located on the 380 hectares of land was officially opened on May 25, 2023. Iran's Road and Urban Development Minister Mehrdad Bazrpash, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and other officials of the country, as well as consuls general of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan and Türkiye attended the opening ceremony.

Thus, 1 million residents of Gonabad County as well as 15 surrounding counties will be able to use this airport.

There are 54 active civil airports in Iran. Some 14 of them are international airports. An average of 30 million passengers are transported through Iranian airports per year.
