BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 13. Iran’s Chabahar port, located in the southeast of the country, is a convenient gateway for Afghanistan and Central Asian countries to reach the Indian Ocean, said Ghasem Askari Nasab, director general of Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization’s branch in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, Trend reports.

He added that Chabahar port offers a cheap and easy way for these countries to export and import goods to and from the world.

Askari Nasab also mentioned that the port has received nearly $1 billion of investment in recent years and can handle 8.5 million tons of cargo annually with its ability to host 100,000-tonnage ships.

The director general further stated that Chabahar port charges $1,000 less for each container than other ports in the region and the country, which can attract more businesses and transporters to use this port.

Reportedly, Iran’s ports have a total capacity of more than 285 million tons per year and the country plans to increase it to 500 million tons.
