BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 29. The State Customs Committee (SCC) of Azerbaijan is currently working on the design of a new checkpoint on the border with Georgia, Chairman of the State Customs Committee (SCC) of Azerbaijan Shahin Baghirov said within Trend News Agency's "Relevant with Sahil Karimli" project.

Speaking about future plans to increase the number of border checkpoints with other countries, Shahin Baghirov noted the availability of such an intention.

"Two more customs checkpoints are currently operational at the Lachin border checkpoint and other freed territory. Work is also being done in connection with the "Aghbend" checkpoint [Zangezur corridor]. Its design will be completed soon, and construction will commence. The "Astarachay" checkpoint on the North-South transit corridor is set to open soon. One of our top focuses is to increase the number of checkpoints. We are now designing a new border checkpoint with Georgia as well as improving the old ones. This will make people more comfortable and boost the flow of automobiles. We also intend to keep the work at the checkpoints up-to-date. In general, our presence at checkpoints is growing," he said.

The Zangezur corridor project proposed by Azerbaijan is aimed at establishing transport communication between the main territory of Azerbaijan and its exclave, the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, passing through the territory of Armenia. This project emerged in the course of the agreements outlined in the trilateral statement signed by the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Russia on the outcome of the second Karabakh war in 2020.

One of the elements of the agreement confirmed Armenia's readiness to ensure the security of the transportation link with Nakhchivan, facilitating the free movement of people, vehicles, and goods in both directions.
