BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 24. Russia is testing the possibilities of a single water route within the framework of the development of the North-South International Transport Corridor (ITC) this week, the Russian Export Center (REC) said, Trend reports.

“REC and State Transport Leasing Company (STLC) started testing the possibilities of a single water route within the framework of the North-South ITC on Monday. A dry cargo ship of three thousand tons (with barley cargo) was shipped from the Volgograd Region along the Volga and Caspian Sea toward one of the northern ports of Iran. Based on the results of this voyage, specific proposals for the development of a complex water route within the framework of the North-South Corridor will be formed,” the information noted.

REC and STLC expect that the test voyage will take 15-20 days.

“If the travel time is 15-20 days, it will halve the cost of cargo delivery and triple the time of cargo delivery to Iran compared to the route through the Suez Canal as well as the mixed route (railroad-road-automobile) along the North-South ITC,” the data of the state-owned company of the Russian Federation assumes.

To note, due to international sanctions, the Russian Federation is accelerating the development of all segments of the North-South ITC.

The ITC itself has been formed since 2000, and its participants include 14 countries, including Azerbaijan.
