BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 17. Cargo transportation by Azerbaijan Railways from January through May 2024 increased by 0.9 percent compared to the same period in 2023, the statistics of the State Statistics Committee (SSC) said, Trend reports.
According to the SSC, Azerbaijan Railways transported 7.65 million tons of cargo in the first five months of 2024, compared to 7.59 million tons in the same period of 2023.
However, on average, 371 railcars were loaded with cargo per day, while unloading amounted to 422 railcars daily.
"In the northern direction (in the direction of the Russian Federation), 17,200 tons of cargo were shipped every day on average from January through May. In the eastern direction (across the Caspian Sea), there are 3,800 tons of cargo daily; in the southern direction (to Iran), there are 800 tons per day," the SCC data said.
To note, a total of 18.3 million tons of cargo passed through Azerbaijani Railways in 2023 (a decrease of 2.6 percent).
