Kazakhstan Materials 11 March 2011 18:13 (UTC +04:00)

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev is against wearing hijab and paranja by youth of Kazakhstan.

"I have always been against headscarves, especially at schools and universities", Nazarbayev said on Friday at a public meeting in the city of Turkistan in the south of the country, Kazakhstan Today reported.

"Kazakh women have never worn veils and have never hidden their faces, President said. We respect Muslim traditions, but we have our own path and our own cultural values".

There have been discussions in Kazakhstan for several years about the right of students to wear Muslim head scarves at school and universities. Some followers of Islam argue that even unofficial prohibition of wearing hijab at school violates the right on freedom of religion.
