Eighteen Muslim graves have been vandalized in the central Kazakh town of Aktau, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.

Qaraghandy Oblast Interior Ministry spokesman Zhanatai Sembekov told RFE/RL that a local imam reported the incident to police on May 10.

Sembekov said the gravestones in a Muslim cemetery in the small town of Aktau were overturned and in some cases destroyed.

Police have launched an investigation.

About two-thirds of Kazakhstan's 16 million people are Muslim.
