Kazakhstan, Astana, Nov.17 / Trend, A. Maratov /

Chairman of the Spiritual Board of Muslims of Kazakhstan (SBMK), the country's supreme mufti Absattar Haji Derbisali recommended that Kazakh women should wear national dress, SBMK said commenting on false media reports on the Supreme Mufti's speech at the first religious forum in Astana on Wednesday.

"The Supreme Mufti is not against the hijab. Let no one manipulate Supreme Mufti's remarks," Spiritual Board said in a statement on Thursday.

SBMK believes that the media outlets have incorrectly interpreted the remarks of the Supreme Mufti.

"With regard to the hijab, then let our mothers and sisters always wear a headscarf and also not to put up their body for show, wearing immodest clothing.

"They put on the saukele and wear the headscarf, though they did not name them hijabs, as there is no word 'hijab' in the lexicon of the Kazakh language. Our women's clothes always match the canons of Shariah, as well as national traditions and colour. Therefore, high priority should be given to Kazakh traditional clothes, "Absattar Haji Derbisali said.
