Elections to Kazakh Zhanaozen’s governing body to be held after state of emergency abolition

Maslikhats (local representative body) Elections in the Kazakh city of Zhanaozen will be held after the abolition of the current state of emergency, deputy chairman of the Central Election Commission of Kazakhstan Vladimir Foos said on Friday, Novosti-Kazakhstan reported.

"Elections to Majilis [lower chamber of parliament] and to maslikhats scheduled for January 15 will not be held in Zhanaozen due to the state of emergency," Foos said. "The elections to regional maslikhats should be appointed and hold after the abolition of the state of emergency."

The state of emergency was imposed in Zhanaozen after mass riots on Dec. 16. Then it was extended until Jan. 31. Kazakh Constitutional Council said earlier, that according to the legislation, election could not be hold in Zhanaozen during state of emergency.

Mass riots hit the Kazakh oil town of Zhanaozen on Dec.16 killing 16 and injuring roughly 100 people. Buildings and cars were burned and property of individuals and legal bodies destroyed. Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev declared a state of emergency in Zhanaozen until Jan.31.

Parliamentary and maslikhats election in Kazakhstan are scheduled for Jan.15.
