Residents of the Zhanaozen city of the Kazakh Mangistau region will be able to move to other regions through the employment programme, Minister of Labour and Social Protection Gulshara Abdykalikova said at a government meeting.

"As part of their employment opportunities, Zhanaozen residents will be able to move to other regions at their own request. It is anticipated they will consider their employment prospects and in particular those who live in the city where there are limited job offers will be able to move beyond the region to find work," Mr Abdykalikova said.

In this regard, the Ministry proposes to optimise the list of necessary documents. In February amendments will be made to existing legislative acts.

Mass riots hit the Kazakh oil city of Zhanaozen in Mangystau region on Dec.16. As a result 16 people were killed and dozens were injured. Buildings and cars were burned and private and public property destroyed. A state of emergency was declared in Zhanaozen from Dec.17 to Jan 30.

The riots were preceded by oil companies' employees striking over dissatisfaction with their wages. At present, the region's authorities and the government are taking steps at normalising the situation in the city and employment of city residents.
