Kazakhstan, Astana, Dec. 20 / Trend, D. Mukhtarov /
At its 67th session, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on 'Promotion of interreligious and intercultural dialogue, understanding and cooperation for peace' the main element being a proclamation of the 'International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures' for the period of 2013-2022', initiated by Kazakhstan.
According to the resolution, the General Assembly charged UNESCO as the leading UN agency for the global holding of the decade involving all member states, the most influential international governmental and non-governmental organisations and prominent figures in culture, education and science.
The International Decade of the Rapprochement of Cultures aims to become a worthy continuation of the global convergence of the cultures theme undertaken during the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures in 2010 and further enhances the efforts of the international community to strengthen the dialogue between cultures, civilisations and religions.
More than 1000 events were held around the world by member states, international and regional partners and UNESCO during the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures, initiated by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev within the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly.
The programme of the decade will consist of cultural events around the world which will lay the foundation for a new dialogue to strengthen peace and preservation of human values for present and future generations.
Proclamation of the International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures by UN General Assembly is another confirmation of the international authority and Kazakhstan's contribution to the global process of intercultural and interreligious dialogue.
