Alik Aidarbayev has been appointed mayor of the Kazakh Mangistau region, the Kazakh prime minister's press service said today.

Aidarbayev replaced Maurzhan Mukhamedzhanov, who was appointed to the region after the December 2011 events in Zhanaozen.

Earlier, Aidarbayev held the position of director general at KazMunaiGas Exploration and Production.

"Today, Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov has introduced new mayor for the Mangistau region," the prime minister's website said today. "The extraordinary session of regional representative bodies was held in Aktau. Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov and head of the Kazakh Presidential Administration Karim Massimov attended."

During the session, Akhmetov read the president's letter on introducing Alik Aidarbayev to the post of mayor. MPs unanimously supported the candidacy offered by the president.

Aidarbayev thanked the President.

Serik Akhmetov thanked former mayor Baurzhan Mukhamedzhanov for his activity.
