14,168 road traffic accidents (RTA) were recorded in 2012 in Kazakhstan, which left 3,022 people dead and 17,488 people injured, The Interior Ministry Traffic Police Committee said on Monday.

"In comparison with 2011, the number of incidents has increased by 17.9 percent, the number of killed and wounded increased by 11.6 percent and 24.9 percent respectively," the committee said.

Poor driving allows for gross violations of traffic regulations to remain the main cause of accidents. Thus, 23.4 percent of all accidents were reported for exceeding the speed (3,316 road accidents); exit into oncoming traffic is ranked 2nd (1,301 accidents, or 9.2 percent of the total number of accidents), improper roundabouts are the 3rd (1,126 traffic accident, or 7.9 percent of cases).

"424 accidents killing 110 people and injuring 588 people were caused by drunk drivers... A total of 6,276 accidents involving pedestrians resulting in death of 896 people and injuring 5,760 were reported," the report says.

1,684 accidents occurred through the fault of pedestrians, including registered 91 accidents caused by pedestrians in a state of intoxication.
