The Director of the Border Service of Kazakhstan's National Security Committee (NSC) Nurlan Dzhulamanov was arrested on suspicion of abuse of power, the committee's press service said Oct. 27.

"On Oct. 27, the security subdivision of the NSC of the Republic of Kazakhstan launched a criminal case as part of an inspection of the facts of abuse of power by the border service officials. The border service director, N.A. Dzhulamanov was detained as a suspect," the NSC said.

It was noted that the necessary investigative and operational activities are underway as part of the criminal case. The Main Military Prosecutor's Office is carrying out the supervision.

Nurlan Dzhulamanov was appointed the director of the Border Service by the instruction of Kazakhstan's president on Jan. 15, 2013.

Previously, he served as the chief of the air defense forces of Kazakh land forces, and the chief of the supreme command school of Kazakhstan's armed forces.

He also served as the deputy defense minister.
