BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 14. Dredging work will begin on navigable waterways in Kazakhstan's Atyrau region in 2023, Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan Serikkali Brekeshev said, while speaking at the government hour in Parliament, Trend reports citing Kazakh media.

“Projects were implemented to increase water content and improve the hydrological regime of the Zhaiyk and Kigash rivers in the Atyrau region in 2018-2020. The total length of the canals was 194 km. Work in this direction continues,” he said.

Brekeshev said that a 3 billion tenge ($6.5 million) was allocated from the state budget for this work in 2022.

“In accordance with the instruction of the President given during a meeting with the population of the Atyrau region, dredging work on navigable waterways will begin in 2023. This will additionally create favorable conditions for the passage of fish to spawning grounds, as well as the possibility of unhindered access of fishing vessels to the Caspian Sea,” he added.
