BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 25. The systematic work of diversifying irrigated and monoculture areas continues in Kazakhstan, aiming to promote sustainable agricultural practices, said Minister of Agriculture of Kazakhstan Yerbol Karashukeyev speaking at the Senate, Trend reports.
"This year, we plan to reduce cotton cultivation areas by 14,800 hectares by transitioning to other high-profit crops. Meanwhile, no significant decline is expected in rice cultivation. The main reasons for this are the social importance of rice cultivation and the soil salinity in the Kyzylorda region," the minister said, addressing the utilization of irrigated lands and the implementation of water-saving technologies.
Furthermore, the minister highlighted that the administration of the Kyzylorda region motivates the increase in rice cultivation due to ongoing efforts in channel reconstruction, procurement of pumping stations, and intensified water diplomacy initiatives, which have been supported by both the national and local budgets.
Also, the agriculture minister noted that the regions of Kazakhstan are applying water-saving technologies, emphasizing the country's commitment to sustainable agriculture practices.
This strategic shift towards crop diversification aligns with Kazakhstan's agricultural goals, promoting the efficient use of resources, enhancing agricultural productivity, and ensuring sustainable land and water management practices. By reducing cotton cultivation areas and exploring alternative crops, Kazakhstan aims to bolster its agricultural sector's resilience, economic profitability, and environmental sustainability.
