ASTANA, Kazakhstan, October 19. The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) signed an agreement on the implementation of the regional program "Water resources management in Central Asia taking into account climate impacts," Trend reports.
The document was signed by Minister Nurzhan Nurzhigitov and program manager Carolina Milov.
The program, which involves Germany, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, is part of the regional climate and security initiative "Green Central Asia" of the German Federal Government. The goal of the program is to introduce integrated water resources management at the regional level, taking into account climate impacts.
The program will develop measures to improve the efficiency of water use in the region, implement pilot projects for water resource management taking climate impacts into account, and adapt the Amudarya and Syrdarya river basins to climate change.
An operational plan for the implementation of the program will be developed, and a coordination committee will also be created, including the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan and other participants.
The German side undertakes to provide experts and provide basic and additional training for local specialists.
In addition, GIZ can supply the necessary equipment and provide financial support in the form of grants.
The agreement will be valid until February 2027.
