Kazakhstan bares January's pay card transaction scope

ASTANA, Kazakhstan, February 29. The volume of transactions using payment cards of Kazakh issuers amounted to 11.9 trillion tenge (about $26.4 billion); the number of transactions was 862.3 million in January 2024, Trend reports.

Data from Kazakhstan's National Bank shows that compared to the same period in 2023, the number of non-cash transactions increased by 13.6 percent and reached 842.7 million transactions. The volume increased by 14.6 percent, reaching 10.1 trillion tenge (about $22.4 billion).

At the same time, payment cardholders carried out 19.7 million transactions to withdraw cash in the amount of 1.8 trillion tenge (about $4 billion). There is an increase in the number of cash withdrawal transactions compared to January 2023 by 14 percent and an increase in the volume of transactions by 22.2 percent.

Moreover, the main share of non-cash transactions in Kazakhstan was made through the Internet/mobile banking (78.9 percent of the total number of transactions and 89 percent of the total volume of non-cash payments and money transfers) and POS terminals (21 percent and 10.6 percent of the total number and volume of non-cash payments and money transfers).

In addition, cash dispensing transactions were mainly carried out through ATMs (98.4 percent and 87.5 percent of the total number and volume of cash dispensing transactions, respectively).

As of February 1, 2024, Kazakhstan had 75.3 million payment cards in circulation. Debit cards account for 81 percent of all payment cards in the country, while credit cards account for 16.2 percent. Debit cards with credit limits and prepaid cards account for 2.8 percent of the total.
