An event devoted to the Year of Chingiz Aitmatov will be held at the Aalam Ordo cultural center in Kyrgyzstan. On Feb. 3, Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev announced the event.
Kyrgyzstan proclaimed 2008 the Year of Chingiz Aitmatov to honor the 80th birthday of the world famous literary figure. Until recently, Aitmatov served as ambassador to Benelux countries. After the end of his diplomatic career, he concentrated on literary and social activities.
During his visit to Kazan in May 2008 to advise Tatar cinematographers making a film about his life, the writer fell ill and was taken to the Nurnberg-Sud Clinic. On June 10, Aitmatov passed away.
The final activities of the Year of Chingiz Aitmatov were not canceled and proceeded with a solemn note. The results will be discussed in May 2009.
The activities aim to "maintain and develop historical and cultural heritage and revive the spiritual values of the Kyrgyz people, as well as open the Aitmatov Theater as a spiritual center for the nation," the Kyrgyz President Press Service reported.
