Kyrgyzstan sees 3,000 seismic activity cases annually

Kyrgyzstan Materials 16 July 2009 14:45 (UTC +04:00)

At least three thousand cases of seismic activity are registered in Kyrgyzstan annually, Kanat Abdrahmatov, Director of the Seismology Institute under the National Academy of Sciences, informed the press conference at the news agency 24.kg on Thursday.

Some of them result in tragic consequences. "Distractive earthquake in Alay region of Osh oblast in October 2008 that killed 75 people is a painful reminder of that," Abdrahmatov added.

As to the director, large-scale destructions are the result of non-compliance with construction standards. "People built houses unprofessionally. But the most grievous is that people do not learn from such tragedies. They continue to build houses with no account to architectural and construction standards," he said.
