BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 3. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is actively supporting Kyrgyzstan in improving its industrial safety, Secretary of the UNECE’s Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents Franziska Hirsch told Trend.
"Kyrgyzstan has benefited from the Project on supporting countries of Central Asia in strengthening the safety of mine tailings (since 2020) through participation in subregional meetings (e.g. Subregional meetings to enhance capacity for governance and policy-making on tailings safety in Central Asia)," Hirsch said.
Within the framework of the Project on "National Policy Dialogues for Industrial Safety in Central Asia (Phase I: Launch)", the review of national policies and legislation related to industrial safety has been carried out in five Central Asian countries, notably in Kyrgyzstan.
Hirsch underlined that the current activities of this project aim to harmonize national policies and legislation in the field of industrial safety with the requirements of the UNECE Industrial Accidents Convention and policies in other related areas, including disaster risk reduction.
"UNECE has developed 5 country-specific reports, which reflect the current situation and suggest recommendations to the national authorities on how to better align the national legislation with the Convention’s requirements to enhance the implementation of the Convention on Industrial Accidents and strengthen the policy linkages and coherence regarding industrial safety," she said.
The reports are currently at the final stage of development and will soon be sent to the national authorities of the five countries of Central Asia, including Kyrgyzstan.
