BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 11. The World Bank (WB) prepares a new project and financial assistance for the development of higher education in Kyrgyzstan, which is expected to be approved within the next few months, Vice President for Human Development at the World Bank Mamta Murthi said, Trend reports via the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan.

The statement was made following the meeting between the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan Akylbek Japarov with the WB’s Vice President in Washington, within the framework of Japarov's working visit to the US. During the visit, the chairman will take part in the World Bank and International Monetary Fund's Spring Meetings (April 10-16).

The two sides discussed projects in the areas of the economy, banking, education, social development, and digitization. They also exchanged opinions on future joint projects.

During the meeting, special attention was paid to the Evolution Roadmap of the WB, which will allow the bank to better address the emerging challenges.

The Chairman expressed his general support for the proposed reforms, including the inclusion of climate change and pandemic preparedness issues in the WB’s mission, the updating of the WB’s operational model, and the increase in financial assistance to client countries.

Japarov also proposed that the bank consider mechanisms for converting external debt into green and climate initiatives.

In turn, the WB’s Vice President highlighted the significant progress in increasing financial support for the education and healthcare sectors in Kyrgyzstan.

At the same time, the WB is currently implementing the Learning for the Future project in Kyrgyzstan, which is aimed at improving the preparation of children for school.

The World Bank has been providing investments, technical assistance, advisory, and analytics to major economic sectors of Kyrgyzstan since the country joined the bank in 1992.
