Kyrgyzstan sees marginal improvement in extraction of brown coal in 1Q2023

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 26. Kyrgyzstan has extracted 752,200 tons of brown coal (lignite) from January through March 2023, which is 14.2 percent more than in 1Q2022 (658,400 tons), Trend reports via the State Statistical Committee of Kyrgyzstan.

As reported by the committee, in March this year Kyrgyzstan extracted 229,300 tons of brown coal, which is 12.7 percent more than in the corresponding month of 2022 (203,500 tons).

At the same time, Kyrgyzstan decreased the extraction of bituminous coal in 1Q2023 by 5.2 percent year-on-year – from 113,600 tons to 107,600 tons.

Meanwhile, the extraction of this type of coal grew by 158 percent or 2.5 times in March 2023, compared to the same month of 2022 – from 27,500 tons up to 71,100 tons.

Overall, Kyrgyzstan increased the production of brown and bituminous coal by around 10 percent year-on-year in 1Q2023.

In general, the share of mining accounted for 12 percent of Kyrgyzstan’s industrial production in the aforementioned period.

Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstan extracted 3.6 million tons of brown and bituminous coal in 2022, which is an increase of over 3 million tons in 2021.

The largest share of coal last year was produced in the Naryn region of Kyrgyzstan. The production volume in the region amounted to 1.7 million tons in 2022, which is an increase of 1.3 times over 1.2 million in 2021.
