Kyrgyzstan's brown coal production surges

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 25. The volume of brown coal (lignite) produced in Kyrgyzstan from January through April 2023 amounted to 953,600 tons, Trend reports.

According to Kyrgyzstan’s statistical data, production increased by 10.9 percent compared to the corresponding period in 2022, when 859,800 tons were produced.

There was a marginal decline of 4.5 percent in brown coal production in April of this year, with 192,500 tons being extracted over 201,300 tons in April 2022.

Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstan has decreased the extraction of bituminous coal from January through April 2023 by 19.2 percent year-on-year – from 163,900 tons to 132,500 tons.

Notably, the extraction of this type of coal dropped by 51 percent in April 2023, compared to the same month of 2022 – from 50,300 tons up to 24,800 tons.

Overall, Kyrgyzstan increased the production of brown and bituminous coal by around 3.3 percent year-on-year from January through April 2023.

Kyrgyzstan recorded a growth in coal extraction in 2022, with a total of 3.6 million tons of brown and bituminous coal being mined. The figure increased by 20 percent compared to 3 million in 2021.

The Naryn region of Kyrgyzstan held the highest share of coal production last year. The region's coal production volume reached 1.7 million tons in 2022, marking a significant growth of 1.3 times compared to 1.2 million tons in 2021.
