BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, September 12. Kyrgyzstan will need up to $3 billion to modernize and develop its water infrastructure, Trend reports.

This was noted by Nurlan Nabiev, head of Asian Development Bank's (ADB) project implementation unit of the Climate Change and Disaster-Resilient Water Resources Sector Project, during a roundtable discussion on the topic of "Adapting Water Resources to Climate Change in Kyrgyzstan."

He said that funds of such magnitude are necessary to support the maintenance of approximately 80-90 percent of all equipment in the country's water management system.

Nabiev also mentioned that at present, there are three major international donors in Kyrgyzstan's water management system. In 2019, ADB allocated $43.6 million, World Bank (WB) provided Kyrgyzstan with approximately $49 million, and Islamic Development Bank (IDB) provided around $40 million.

The current sovereign portfolio ADB in Kyrgyzstan consisted of 17 loans and 20 grants valued at $861.2 million as of the beginning of August 2023

Up to that point, ADB has provided a total of $2.5 billion through 208 loans, grants, and technical assistance to Kyrgyzstan.
