NATO to open special center in Tajikistan

The North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) will help Tajikistan to create a special rescue center in Dushanbe, which will be equipped with modern disaster warning equipment, CA-NEWS reported.

On Wednesday, Emomali Rahmon met with Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the NATO Secretary General, reports President's Press Service.

The meeting discussed prospects of cooperation between Tajikistan and NATO in the framework of "Partnership for Peace". Parties discussed allocation of new technical equipment on Tajik borders.

The parties discussed training of military personnel for scientific research, opening a special rescue center which will be equipped with modern disaster warning equipment. Rahmon and Scheffer discussed upcoming meeting in the framework of "Partnership for Peace" in Astana.

Particular attention was paid to un-mining of Tajik - Afghan border.

"Scheffer praised role of Tajikistan in the region and level of cooperation between Tajikistan and NATO in Afghanistan," noted the press service.

Rahmon stressed a need for "active" cooperation of NATO with countries bordering Afghanistan. "Along with military actions in Afghanistan, it is necessary to strengthen drug combat and realize socio - economic programs," emphasized the President of Tajikistan.

Rahmon invited Scheffer to visit Tajikistan.
