BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 24. Tajikistan’s Sughd region in the northwest of the country imported 31,439 cars worth $125 million from January through December 2022, First Deputy Head of the Regional Customs Department for the Sughd region, Anvar Okilov, said, Trend reports with reference to Tajik media.

According to him, the figure increased by 11,300 cars or $49 million, compared to the same period of 2021 (20,000 cars for $76 million).

In the reporting period, the Sughd region mostly imported cars from European countries, China, Georgia, Russia, South Korea and Uzbekistan.

Okilov also noted, that in 2018 Tajikistan forbade to import of cars released before 2005 to the country.

In the event of an attempt to transport such vehicles, the customs authorities close them in a special warehouse. If necessary and with the permission of the owner of the vehicles, the cars can be re-exported.

According to the state customs service, as of October 2022, Tajikistan has imported 10 brands cars for ten years: OPEL, Toyota, Mercedes- Benz, Hyundai, Lexus, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Daewoo, and KIA.

At the same time, imports of passenger cars from Tajikistan have declined by 50 percent in the last ten years. While the passenger cars imports stood at 51,325 cars in 2001, only 24,908 cars were imported in 2021.
