BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 4. While implementing rehabilitation work on a former uranium ore deposit in Tajikistan’s Tabosar industrial site, Rosatom places an absolute priority on ensuring the safety of people and the environment, Eduard Nikitin, the Director of Nuclear Decommissioning Programs at TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom told Trend.
“Rosatom specialists moved the power transmission line to a safe area, built engineering and technical service areas, equipped sanitary checkpoints for personnel, and built a special facility for decontamination of special vehicles,” Nikitin said.
He added that the area around the reclamation site has been fenced off, and dust suppression measures have been implemented. There is also a checkpoint and a radiation safety service operating at Tabosar, which regularly conducts radiation monitoring.
Furthermore, on the initiative of Rosatom and a local contractor in Tajikistan, students from the nearest school were temporarily transferred to another educational institution for the 2022-2023 academic year, which is located at a safe distance from the work site.
Minister of Industry and New Technologies of Tajikistan Sherali Kabir, Director for Public Policy on Radioactive Waste, Spent Nuclear Fuel and Nuclear Decommissioning at Rosatom Oleg Kryukov, and General Director of the Central Design and Technological Institute of TVEL Mikhail Tarasov signed an agreement on rehabilitation work on a former uranium ore deposit in Tajikistan’s Tabosar in September 2022.
Since 2021, TVEL JSC has been the Basic Organization of the CIS member States for the elimination of nuclear heritage, the management of spent nuclear fuel, radioactive waste and the decommissioning of nuclear and radiation hazardous facilities.
