DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, July 22. Tajikistan exported electricity worth over $43.2 million from January through June 2023, Trend reports.
As per the data provided by the Statistical Agency of the country, this amount is $1.4 million less than during the same period in 2022.
According to Barki Tojik, national energy company of Tajikistan, the country has agreements to supply electricity to Afghanistan throughout the year, but in limited quantities during autumn and winter.
The reason for this is that in autumn and winter, Tajikistan does not have enough electricity to meet even domestic demands. During the summer, however, the country has a substantial surplus in water and energy resources.
In May of this year, Uzbekistan signed an agreement with Tajikistan to import 1.285 billion kWh of electricity between May and September 2023. This practice of importing electricity from Tajikistan to meet Uzbekistan's energy needs has been ongoing since 2018.
Meanwhile, Tajikistan produced around 10.7 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in the first half of the current year, with 95 percent of it generated by hydroelectric power plants.
