DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, July 24. The World Food Program (WFP) provided humanitarian assistance to a total of 4,240 people in Tajikistan in June 2023, Trend reports.
According to the WFP, among the beneficiaries, 51 percent were men and 49 percent were women. Throughout this period, a substantial amount (52.2 tons) of food was distributed to those in need.
On June 23, WFP, with the collaboration of the Embassy of Russia in Tajikistan, delivered 1,500 tons of fortified wheat flour and 70 tons of yellow split peas to the Ministry of Education and Science of Tajikistan.
These food supplies aimed to support the implementation of the School Feeding Program in the Districts under Tajikistan Central Government Jurisdiction, Khatlon region, and Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) of the country.
In addition to this, WFP also initiated the Home-Grown School Feeding (HGSF) project in Tajikistan in the same month. The primary aim of the HGSF initiative is to provide children going to school with safe, diverse, and nutritious food sourced locally from smallholder farmers.
WFP has been actively involved in Tajikistan since 1993 and currently operates under the Country Strategic Plan (2023-2026), initiated in January 2023.
The strategic plan outlines specific goals for the coming years. By 2026, the aim is to strengthen the livelihoods, resilience, and adaptive capacities of food-insecure and vulnerable populations in both urban and rural areas through the improvement of climate-resilient and nutrition-sensitive agri-food value chains.
