DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, October 26. Tajikistan plans to increase power generation capacity by 4.7 GW by 2030, Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan Sorbon Kholmukhammadzoda, said, Trend reports.
He made this announcement during the "Energy Efficiency in Tajikistan: Prospects and Challenges" international conference in Dushanbe.
He stressed that Tajikistan is now working on major projects to construct hydroelectric power stations, including the Rogun HPP. In the next seven years, the country plans to increase its energy capacity by another 4 GW of clean hydroelectric power, which can be exported to neighboring countries.
In addition, he mentioned that Tajikistan wants to bring in about 700 MW of solar and wind power by 2030. To make this happen, projects with a combined capacity of around 560 MW have already been initiated and are expected to be completed within the next five years.
According to Tajikistan's National Statistical Committee, the country generated a total of 17.1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity from January through September 2023, which is a 4.8 percent increase compared to the same period in 2022.
In September, President Emomali Rahmon highlighted the importance of ongoing construction of the Rogun Hydroelectric Power Plant during the "Dushanbe-2023" International Investment Forum. He emphasized its potential to provide clean electricity to Tajikistan and its neighboring countries. The Rogun HPP is expected to have a capacity of 3,800 MW, making it the largest hydroelectric power project in the country.
