DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, February 16. The World Food Programme (WFP) extended humanitarian aid to 435,342 people in Tajikistan in January 2024, Trend reports.
According to the WFP, 51 percent of this support was directed towards men and 49 percent towards women. A total of 692 tons of food were provided, along with cash-based transfers totaling $38,694.
It was noted that the Tajikistan Food Security Safety Net project (TFSSN), implemented by WFP Tajikistan Country Office with support of USAID, is currently underway in four districts and towns (Varzob, Sharinav, Vahdat, Yovon). It involves constructing 40 greenhouses for vertical agriculture and setting up 10 mushroom production facilities, all scheduled for completion in February 2024. Additionally, the project has started rehabilitating 130 km of irrigation canals and establishing 30 hectares of agroforestry since January.
WFP has been actively involved in Tajikistan since 1993 and is now operating under the Country Strategic Plan (2023-2026) initiated in January 2023.
This strategic plan outlines specific objectives for the upcoming years, with a focus on improving the livelihoods, resilience, and adaptive capacities of food-insecure and vulnerable populations in both urban and rural areas. The plan places particular emphasis on enhancing climate-resilient and nutrition-sensitive agricultural and food value chains by 2026.
