Chevron studies opportunities to explore Turkmen section of Caspian

American oil and gas corporation Chevron opened its representative office in Ashkhabad and is exploring opportunities to develop rich hydrocarbon resources of the Turkmen section of the Caspian Sea, an official Turkmen source said.

Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berymuhamedov, Chevron Board of Directors Deputy Manager John S. Watson and Vice President of Business Development Jay Pryor shared of long-term plans. Chevron is operating in 180 states and has qualified fuel and energy complex.

Ashgabat put on tender 32 licensed offshore blocks. According to Turkmen specialists, the forecasted resources of the Turkmen section of the Caspian Sea are estimated at 12 billion tons of oil and 6 trillion cubic meters of gas. American businessmen took part in the international conference on reliability and stability of energy transit supplies. National TV channel Altyn Asyr noted that Watson stressed the importance of Turkmenistan's initiative, which was approved unanimously at the UN General Assembly by 192 countries, many of whom served as co-sponsors.

"Turkmenistan is paying specific attention to diversification of export routes, knowing the importance of reliable guarantees for a smooth delivery of energy to world markets, Berdymuhamedov said.

The sides shared thoughts on prospective potential cooperation, as well as reviewed the ways to combine efforts given the priorities of development of national fuel and energy complex and mutual interests.
