Ukraine sees Turkmenistan, which occupies a key position in Central Asia, as a highly promising partner, the Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said and local media reported. Yanukovych is on a two-day official visit (Sept.12-13) in Ashgabat.

Following talks with President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov, Yanukovych noted that favorable conditions have been created at this stage for further growth of trade turnover between the two countries, the Neytralniy Turkmenistan newspaper reported.

Yanukovych voiced "Ukraine's interest in developing a partnership with Turkmenistan in the petroleum sector and strengthening work to further examine specific projects and mechanisms of interaction."

In turn, Berdimuhammedov said that current turnover of trade between the two countries does not reflect its mutual potential.

He believes that Turkmenistan and Ukraine should strengthen their cooperation in the sphere of high technologies and their practical implementation in developing industry, oil, gas, transport, communications, and agriculture.

"Our Ukrainian partners have good developments that could be effectively applied in our country," he said.

The Vatan newspaper quoted Berdimuhammedov, saying that Turkmen enterprises can now produce high quality products which open "good opportunities for promotion in the Ukrainian market." The sides agreed that the tourism industry could be a new and promising area forcooperation.

Berdimuhammedov noted that Turkmenistan and Ukraine have all the necessary elements, including a favorable geographical position.

In this regard, he voiced the idea of studying possibilities in a Turkmen-Ukrainian partnership in the sphere of transportation, including in inter-regional relations, using the potential of transportation and communication networks of Central Asian, Caspian, and Black Sea regions.

Emphasizing that Turkmenistan and Ukraine have extensive partnership experience in realizing joint projects, Yanukovych spoke in support of the initiative "on the continuation of this fruitful cooperation, particularly in the construction of facilities such as solar power plants."
In addition, Ukraine is ready to cooperate in the field of scientific and space technology.
