When visiting one of the naval units located in the suburb of Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov said that "as any state that has access to sea, needs ships to patrol its sea borders, to maintain their security and counter such negative phenomena and contemporary challenges such as terrorism, organized poaching crime and drug trafficking." The statement was issued by the Turkmen government on Monday.
Berdimuhammadov visited a ship-repair shop, where he familiarized himself with ongoing work there, and also enquired about the conditions and specifics of the staff's labor.
"The Caspian Sea must always be and will be the sea of friendship and harmony. This is the aim of Turkmenistan's neutrality, transparency and good neighborliness policy. This is consistent with a purely defensive doctrine," the President said at the meeting.
The country has approved the Navy Forces development program.
In June 2010, the Defense Ministry's Naval Institute was established.
